Why did the Plumbers Gasfitters & Drainlayers Board launch StaySafe?
A typical day for an investigator conducting a Board operation involves visiting sites, checking licences and making sure the quality of work being carried out is up to the standard required. Due to the nature of their roles, investigators working for the Board on industrial sites can be exposed to potential hazards such as slips, trips, falls and various other health and safety related injury and risk.
“Since our investigators spend a large amount of the day visiting different sites and carrying out investigations, it is important for us to know where our investigators are at any given time for health and safety reasons” explains Jayson Thomas, Investigations & Complaints Manager at PGDB. “We wanted something that could give us that information and that could also be tailored to the investigators operational requirements.”
Before launching StaySafe, the company relied on traditional communication methods such as calls and texts.

A check-in interval of one hour was set up to monitor employees as they travel and work remotely. Failure to check-in at any point will notify all monitors within the Hub who can then begin following response procedures.
Man-down alerts have also been activated to alert a monitor even when the employee can’t. Due to working in such unpredictable environments like construction sites, our investigators are at risk of workplace accidents, such as; slips trips and falls and being in contact with asbestos or other harmful materials.
StaySafe’s man-down alert works by detecting a period of non-movement and sending a notification to the Hub and monitors so that someone can get in contact with the employee and send assistance to their location.
Jayson comments; “Our investigators carry a lot of equipment as part of their roles when conducting visits. When we rolled out StaySafe we were pleased to discover that the solution required no additional device other than a smartphone which investigators already carry with them. It’s great that we have been able to find a health and safety solution that is easily accessible and still able to provide reliable protection from the possible environmental hazards on site”.
